Condition: Very Good. 3 Volumes. folio. pp. 2 p.l., xxiii, [1 leaf], 557; 8 p.l., 581; 12 p.l., 603, [1]blank, [21]index. with half-titles. engraved frontis. portrait of Clarendon by Robert White after Peter Lely in Vol. I only. engraved title vignettes & numerous engraved head & tailpieces & initials throughout the text by Michael Burghers. later half calf (worn but solid, spine labels wanting, repair to lower margin of 3rd leaf in Vol. II, occasional hint of foxing, else internally very good). Second Folio Edition of Clarendon s celebrated History, the most valuable contemporary account of the English Civil War. Begun in April, 1641, and finished during the period of Clarendon s exile, which extended from 1667 until his death, the History was originally prepared for printing under the direction of Laurence Hyde, Earl of Rochester, with the assistance of Dr. Henry Aldrich, Dean of Christ Church, and Thomas Sprat, Bishop of Rochester. Rochester wrote the introduction and dedications. First published in 1702-04, it was one of the handsomest books hitherto produced in England. The book is printed in the Great Primer roman and italic type which had been commissioned by John Fell, Dean of Christ Church and Bishop of Oxford, when he headed the partnership that rented the University s right to print during the years 1672-90. The type was designed and cut by Peter de Walpergen, a German who was employed as typefounder by the partners at Oxford. The fine ornaments & initials were engraved by a Dutchman, Michael Burghers, who succeeded David Loggan to the appointment of engraver to the University.
