Occasional thumb-marking present. Cracking to hinges with exposed binding, causing boards to be slightly loose. Some tearing to edges of pages, text is not affected. Previous owner's inscription to front free endpaper. Binding is slightly shaky. Boards have moderate edge wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Crushing to spine ends with small splits and fraying to cloth. Scuffing and light marking overall. Light tanning to spine and edges. Water stained marking to surfaces.

Bound in the original pictorial cloth with gilt lettering. With a colour frontispiece, engraved title page, nine out of eleven colour plates and numerous engraved illustrations. Missing two plates. Chatterbox was a weekly halfpenny paper for older children, first printed in 1866. This book contains issues No. 1 through to No. 52 of the paper from the year 1903. Containing a wide range of short stories and poetry, accompanied by entertaining illustrations. John Erskine Clarke was a British clergyman who issued the first parish magazine and founded a range of churches and schools in Battersea. With the publisher's advertisements to the rear of the book. With the previous owner's gift inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1908. In the original full cloth pictorial binding. Externally, smart with some shelf wear to the extremities and bumping to the spine. Some light marks to the boards. Hinges starting but firm. Spotting to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Offsetting to the front free endpaper. Previous owner's ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Internally, binding weak. The plate on page 176 is loose. Page 1 of the publisher's advertisements is also loose. A few marks throughout, although the text is generally bright and clean. The illustration on page 189 has been coloured by the previous owner. Good. book.
Cloth. Condition: Good. Not Stated (illustrator). A scarce copy of the 1896 annual for the popular children's magazine Chatterbox, illustrated with colour plates. A scarce work in the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Illustrated with eleven colour plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Collated, complete. Chatterbox was founded in 1866 by John Erskine Clark and was one of the most popular magazines for children in Britain and America and was issued weekly. Chatterbox offered a collection of short stories, articles, poetry and serialized tales. This is a copy of the 1896 bound annual, containing No. 1 to No. 52 of the weekly magazines. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally sound, though faded to the boards and spine, and bumped to the extremities. Front hinge is strained to the title page but is holding reasonably firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, except for tidemarks to the lower corner of pages 391 to the rear free end paper. Good. book.

Chatterbox was a Victorian era children s publication founded in 1866 by John Erskine Clark. Originally it was issued weekly, this copy is the bound annual for 1874. It includes short nonfiction articles, short stories, serialized fiction, and wonderful illustrations. Including many beautiful animal illustrations by renowned artist Harrison Weir. 412 pages, 7-3/4" X 9-3/4". blue cloth covered boards, intricately illustrated debossed design with gilt highlights. Title debossed on the spine within an intricate design with a vine motif. All design elements are intact and legible. The design on the spine is only very slightly rubbed, the front cover design is bright and shows only minor wear. Boards are flat, corners are bumped inward and are worn at the tips and edges. The very tip of the corners of are worn are exposed. Head and heel of the spine panel shows rubbing wear, and short closed tears. Brief gift dedication on the first flyleaf, most likely in fountain pen ink, dated 1875, the ink of the dedication is very faded. No further writing besides that dedication. An appropriate amount of age tanning to the text pages considering the age of the book and type of paper used. Edges of the text block relatively clean considering the age of the book, with some small spots of age tanning. Binding is tight. This copy is not a library discard. The attached photos are of the copy we have in our inventory.
