Leather. Condition: Very Good. Various (illustrator). A very scarce early edition of Sir Clement Edmonde's work on Julius Caesar's 'Commentaries'. ESTC reference no: S121465.With some abridged translations of Caesar's commentaries. This copy is the variant with the imprint ' for Math: Lownes' to the title page.With the bookplate of 'Harry Lawrence Bradfer-Lawrence F.S.A'. to the recto of front endpaper. Lawrence was an antiquarian who had an extensive library.Contemporary inscription to the head of title page dated 1617 of sir PeterManwood, an English politician who sat in the House of Commons several times between 1589 and 1621.With an illustrated title page, and eleven plates. Collated, this copy is without the portrait frontispiece which is sometimes present. Possibly lacking another plate. The ESTC states 'Contents of individual copies vary; see STC essay at head of entry for Edmondes. Twelve plates are present in a complete configuration, and a woodcut portrait of Caesar may be present.' In a contemporary full calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the head and tail of spine. Small loss to the head of the spine. Original ribbon ties are worn, and only the top ties remain. Hinges are strained but firm. Very Good. book.
