The small altar, built at the beginning of the first century CE, was in the exact center of the court. This work is illustrated with 67 b/w photographic plates. Softcover. Condition: vg to fine. First edition. Quarto (11 x 9"). VI, 153, [1]pp (Text), XCVIpp (Plates). Original printed wrappers. This scholarly work provides a valuable contribution to the study of ancient Syrian religion. The authors, continuing the researches of the German excavators of Baalbek, discovered before the temple in the Theodosian basilica which the Germans had spared, numerous fragments of a building of unusual character. It was originally a cubical construction nearly 59 ft, supporting an altar on its roof, which was reached by three double flights of internal monumental staircases, their ceilings coffered with panels of elaborate geometric and vegetable designs. There is some evidence that the entire building was covered with bronze. This work is illustrated with 96 illustrated and photogravure plates. Text in French. Wrappers in overall very good, interior in fine condition.
