First Edition
FIRST EDITION. Original printed blue wrappers, chipped, front wrapper detached. First edition of this first-hand account of the defeat of Col. Dudley, during one of the battles of the War of 1812. "Herewith I forward you a kind of official account of Col. Dudley's defeat . . . I hardly think you will obtain a more correct one . . ." Dudley's defeat, otherwise known as Dudley's Disaster, happened during the first siege of Fort Meigs during the War of 1812. Under the command of General Green Clay (1826-95), Col. Dudley ( ?-1813) led a successful surprise attack against the British batteries. Over-exhilarated by their victory, Dudley's men chased the remaining Indians into the forest, where they were led into an ambush and slaughtered during the ensuing battle. Dudley was scalped and killed. Combs (1793-1881) was a Captain who led a company of thirty riflemen during the attack. He was one of the few survivors of the disaster.
