Condition: Near Fine. v, 337; [ii], 339-704; [iv], 705-825 pp.; small folio (8 x 11.5"), uncut; tan linen spines with printed title labels (a fresh replacement label is tipped in at the rear of each volume), textured paper-covered boards. Three volumes: A-K, L-Z, and Index (a short supplementary volume was issued by the compiler s son, Robert Granniss Cowan, 31 years later, in 1964). This is the greatly expanded and revised edition of Cowan s original seminal work, "A Bibliography of California and the Pacific West, 1510-1906" (1914), printed by one of the foremost American printers of the twentieth century, John Henry Nash. "This is a typical Nash production, printed in a beautiful, readable type on over 800 pages divided into three sturdy, handsome folio volumes" (New York Times Book Review, September 2, 1934). Covering nearly 5,000 titles, this edition remains the standard bibliography of California history. As described in the prospectus, the scope includes "printed works relating to the discovery, exploration, colonization and evangelization of California; its transition from a Mexican colony to one of the United States; the history of the gold discovery and its attendant events; the formation of its governments, State and municipal; its unusual features, such as the Vigilance Committees, Mexican land claims and the Chinese question " Id. Cowan s work remains the standard bibliographical reference on the subject. Small faint spot to spine of vol. I, tiny nick to edge of title label on same volume; interiors quite clean and bright. Overall, a near fine, well-preserved set.
