Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. 56 pages; Contents clean and secure in original binding of reddish-brown cloth spine with pictorial boards depicting various nursery rhyme characters; boards rubbed at corners. Profusely illustrated with wonderful full page colour plates and pictorial borders and head-pieces on each text page by Victorian illustrator Walter Crane. The selection and arrangement of the nursery songs are by Lucy Crane, Walter's sister. Engraved and printed in colours by Edmund Evans. This collection contains 36 nursery rhymes along with their musical scores, including Mulberry Bush, Dickory Dock, Ding Dong Bell, Bo-Peep, Tom the Piper's Son, Jack and Jill; with lesser known ones such as Ploughboy in Luck, Dance a Baby, Lavender's Blue, Jolly Miller, etc. The nature of the binding and paper suggest early 20th century publication date.

[Nursery Rhymes] FINE COLOUR PRINTING, early printings. Two volumes. Small quarto (19 x 19cm), pp.56; pp.56. Both volumes with fine colour illustrations designed by Crane and printed by Evans, accompanying printed music and words to various classic children's songs. First volume with publisher brown cloth to spine, illustrated brown paper-covered boards and dark green endpapers. All edges brown. Second volume with publisher's brown cloth spine, green and orange illustrated paper-covered boards, and endpapers patterned in green. All edges yellow. Second volume also with the dust-jacket printed in green. First volume extremely heavily worn to edges and binding. Hinges split and roughly re-cased. Clean but well-thumbed. Fair. Second volume very clean internally, with hinges just starting in places. Lower corners and edges of boards heavily rubbed and bumped. Jacket lightly toned with a few minor chips and closed tears. Very good. As a pair, good. First published in 1878 and 1880 respectively, and containing such classics as 'Oranges and Lemons;' 'My Lady's Garden;' 'I Saw Three Ships;' 'Three Blind Mice;' 'Baa! Baa! Black Sheep;' 'Hot Cross Buns;' 'Sur le Pont d'Avignon' and 'London Bridge,' among many others. Warne purchased the rights to print many of Routledge's popular children's books in 1900.

A very good copy of the first combined edition of Walter's Crane's three children's books, with a new Preface. Oblong quarto. 30 x 31 cm, 192 pages. Copiously illustrated and decorated in colour by Walter Crane and printed by Edmund Evans. Original vellum-backed gilt decorated brown cloth, top edge gilt. Binding is sound (hinge between endpapers open but holding), pages are clean with a very occasional light fox mark, corners are slightly bumped and vellum slightly soiled - overall a very good copy.
