He was a student at the University of Nebraska. Particular classmates, professors and staff, campus activities and incidents, and attitudes of rural residents toward colleges are discussed. The manuscript also includes highlights of his career as an engineer and his work researching the sugar industry's history, and information about irrigation and sugar production in Nebraska. . The "Sugar Tramp" manuscripts cover many aspects of the sugar industry, including details about both beet and cane sugar production, agricultural practices, sugar industry history and development, and important people involved in the sugar trade. Dan Gutleben was the chief engineer of the Pennsylvania Sugar Company of Philadelphia. His papers consist of letters, reports, and monographs dealing with the history and development of the sugar industry in the United States, especially Hawaii. Calling himself "The Sugar Tramp," Gutleben traveled around the United States in the late 1940s and 1950s, visiting sugar refineries and production plants. His reports of these visits are included, as well as monographs on the first successful beet sugar factory in America, and the development of the monosodium glutamate.
