Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good-. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 292 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "The second battle of Ypres provided the First Canadian Division with its baptism of fire, and it could not have been worse. They were holding a salient, jutting out so that they were targets from three sides. The Germans, for the first time ever, used chlorine gas, which turned the Canadians' bayonets green and destroyed their lungs. Then they discovered that in combat conditions their Ross rifles jammed, as the waves of Germans hit their trenches. At the end John McCrae looked across the battleground where so many hundreds of his countrymen had fallen, and wrote 'In Flanders Fields'. Back in Canada, the war began in earnest the day the casualty lists were posted. " Small notation, place, date and initials in ink on half-title page; light wrinkling at bottom of spine; small bump at bottom corner of boards; slight waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, faint line indentation on front panel.

DJ and boards show light shelf wear, short note top of FFEP. ; A bright, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 332 pages; "General Sir Arthur William Currie, GCMG, KCB (5 December 1875 30 November 1933) was a senior officer of the Canadian Army who fought during World War I. He had the unique distinction of starting his military career on the very bottom rung as a pre-war militia gunner before rising through the ranks to become the first Canadian commander of the Canadian Corps. Currie's success was based on his ability to rapidly adapt brigade tactics to the exigencies of trench warfare, using set piece operations and bite-and-hold tactics. He is generally considered to be among the most capable commanders of the Western Front, and one of the finest commanders in Canadian military history." (Wikipedia).

Half-leather. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. Photographs & maps (illustrator). 1st Edition. SIGNED and inscribed to the title page by Mr. Dancocks. Very gently read. Interior is clean and free of any markings. Black cloth boards are clean with bright gilt titles to spine. Unclipped dustjacket is a bit bumped to extremities, primarily the top edge. Minor shelfwear to show. It was a controversial but breathtaking accomplishment when Canadian soldiers displayed remarkable courage, heroism and endurance capturing the Passchendaele ridge from the Germans. Nine Victoria Crosses were awarded in less than two weeks in the campaign; almost double the total number earned in all of WWII. It was called a slaughter, a futile battle, a game of internal military and political wills but the valiant Canadians in the field turned the tide of the War with their victory. Scarce signed. Signed by Author(s).
