Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Offered is a first edition, first printing of "The Warners: An American Story of To-Day" written by Gertrude Potter Daniels and published in 1901 by the Jamieson-Higgins Co. out of Chicago, Illinois. A hardcover lacking dust jacket with splendid front cover art and containing 252 pages (two color schemes were used for the cover - this copy has a light brown background). A engrossing, tragic novel (I have gently read this copy), strongly anti-capitalist with socialist and anarchist themes throughout, involving Cyrus Warner, a man - homeless when young - who believed in the justice of the American system, one that would lift him out of poverty with hard work and perseverance. After obtaining a job at a factory, he meets Kirby and Ida Fisher, both radical socialists and orators, as well as his future wife, Betty Martin, a stenographer. The chance to purchase a small oil well provides the Warners and their daughter with a comfortable, although frugal, middle class income. After several years, Anthony J. Fellows - a ruthless oil magnate, who seeks to purchase all independent oil wells, "by a word" sends down the price of oil rendering the Warners and others like them impoverished. What follows is a chain of tragedies involving the Warners, their daughter, Kirby and Ida Fisher, and their son as their lives unravel due to capitalist greed. Gertrude Potter Daniels (1876-1940), daughter of a steel magnate and wife of a wealthy Chicago businessman, was an ardent socialist who complained that her works were "suppressed through the interference of capital." Stamp of former owner (F.A. Stevenson) to first inside free page; the outer covers show very light corner wear, very light rubbing to the title letters; a few very light smudges to a few internal pages. Overall, a beautiful copy.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hard cover, 12 mo., in publisher's gray cloth with art deco design to both front and rear boards, in red, white and green, title in red. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed, 130 pp. A "modern" tale of the unravelling of an unhappy society marriage with an unusual, horror twist, penned by a daughter of "Chicago's Millionaire Socialist," (former president of Illinois Steel,) Orrin W.
