Condition: Very Good. 9 x 5.5", full mottled calf, gilt ruled spine, gilt lettering on red leather spine label, 630pp. Covers well worn, warped, scuffed/scraped, wormholes, missing tip of spine, inner hinges cracked, scattered foxing, staining, first 156pp have wormholes/chewing in the lower margins and corners else good, textblock tight. Very detailed information on the free and slave population. For instance, Alabama: classifies the male and female slaves and male and female free colored persons by age groups ie. under 10 and 55 and upwards, groups that include the "deaf and dumb". In Mississippi "Slavery of the blacks is admitted, but the power of the master is placed under the control of the legislature." and Connecticut lists "Blacks not emancipated on account of advanced age or infirmities". And in South Carolina "It may be noticed, that S.C. is the only state in the union, in which the slave populations exceeds in number the free". And in the listing for the Cherokee Nation it lists "those who have since removed into the nation from North Carolina who were living in that on reservations" and much more. FIRST EDITION.
