Softcover. Condition: VG, sewn, in orig. red wrapper. 126 p.; 18.5 cm. (SCM book club ; 209 -- SCM centrebooks : Christian casebooks) Contents: 1 The nature of communication - 2 What is there to communicate? - 3 Across the centuries - 4 The written word - 5 The spoken word - 6 The visual word - 7 The church is the message. -- `No more than a girl can be compelled to accept the love of a particular boy.no more can a man or woman be driven into a position where they have no alternative but to accept the love of God. Just how clearly Jesus saw this, and how scrupulously he observed its implications in the exercise of his ministry, is to be seen by a careful examination of the gospel records. White it seems necessary at an early stage in this book to establish as firmly as possible that the communication of the Christian faith is to be seen in terms of sharing and not of manipulative propaganda - a point to which I shall return on a number of occasions later - it would be a serious mistake to suppose that the communication of the Christian faith is essentially different from other forms of communication, religious or secular.' (p. 12 f.) -- Queries from the wrapper: Why are religious books often so dull? Why is the standard of religious television apparently so low? Why are church papers so depressing? Why is so much preaching joyless and unattractive? Are the churches really doing all that can be done to communicate the gospel today? His book contains not only sharp criticism of many methods of contemporary evangelism but also a positive statement of today's gospel and suggestions of ways in which it can be brought to life.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. Apparent First Edition, no statement. 'From the Collection of Dr Dean Edell.' This book is flat-signed by Dean Edell on the title page. You can see the beautiful blue covers in the photos. The color is so rich I first thought it might be velvet. The inlaid gilt lettering on the front is full with shine, same with the lettering on the spine. On the front there are inlaid Chinese letters. The covers are exceptionally clean. The edges and corners are in excellent shape. The page edges look perfectly clean. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and endpapers are in excellent condition and very clean, illustrated with Chinese letters. The pages are glossy. They're exceptionally clean. I haven't seen any instances of soiling. They're very bright. There is a little bit of crinkling and toning just off the margins, quite typical with glossy pages. There are no placeholder creases. There are no markings of any kind. No attachments. And Dr. Edell's signature is the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It's quite clean. There is a very thin vertical tear on the front cover, a more exact description would be of a 'slit'. It has the appearance of a scratch. There is some actual scratching on the rear cover, also you can vaguely see, under a bright light, what appears to be the tracings of letters, someone must have been writing on something that was sitting on the rear cover. Neither the scratches or the tracings are terribly conspicuous but I've sharply discounted this signed book due to the imperfections on the jacket. The flaps are in very solid condition. On the front flap there is an About the Author write-up. It says in part that 'Christopher Randall is recognized around the world as a leading authority on Chinese Snuff Bottles and Jades. His other interests include Japanese Art and Indo-Persian Arms and Armour.' The jacket is not priced or clipped. I will fit it with a large protective cover after the photos are scanned. From his Wikipedia profile: 'Dean Edell is an American physician and broadcaster who hosted the Dr. Dean Edell radio program, a syndicated radio talk show which aired live from 1979 until 2010. He was also nationally syndicated in television as a medical news reporter and host of his own television shows including NBC's Dr. Dean.' It also mentions that he 'maintains collections of Chinese art, Chinese snuff bottles, and rare books on anatomy. On October 5, 2007, Christie's held an auction of Edell's anatomy art collection.'. Signed.
