Quarto, yellow cloth & full-color illus. boards (hardcover), 63 pp. Near-Fine, with neat former-owner signature; in a dust jacket with light edgewear. From dust jacket: Here is a book that might well be called "the Japanese Mother Goose." It beautifully communicates the essence of Japanese childhood in a form that is immediately and delightfully understandable to children of other lands and cultures. In deft translations of 53 best-loved nursery songs and 55 pages of charmingly original illustrations the book offers an entertaining and instructive look at another country. The rhymes are rendered in a straightforward and attractive style that is simple but does not in the least talk down to the reader, and are suitable for both reading aloud to younger children and self-reading by older children. The illustrations use the subtle colors of Japanese rice paper in a collage technique of startling beauty and instant appeal, captureing the spirit of the verses. Products of an imaginative collaboration, the words and pictures fuse together into a magic whole. Here one finds the wonder, the curiosity, and the pleasure in the fascinating world about them that characterizes children everywhere -- and, in addition, some of the distinctly national qualities of the Japanese child. Here one also finds an important if unwritten message: that different peoples have different ways but still remain very much a part of the brotherhood of mankind, that understanding and a common sense of humanity can bridge all barriers. In this troubled world of ours is it ever too early to start teaching this message? Altogether, these Japanese nursery rhymes, with their Mother Goose quality and their hand-in-glove illustrations, are sure to please children -- and many adults as well, particularly those who have not forgotten the delights and the innocence of childhood. Children's Literature, Poetry, Mother Goose, Traditional Tales, Traditional Rhymes, Japanese, World Cultures, Japan. yslic.
