Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, the author provides a rare glimpse into the lives of the women who lived within the Sultan's palace walls, their hopes, fears, and dreams. The book also examines the complex power dynamics between the harem and the outside world, shedding light on the role of women in Ottoman society. The author does not shy away from the dark realities of life in the harem, including the ever-present threat of violence and the psychological toll it took on its inhabitants. Instead, she uses these realities to paint a vivid portrait of the resilience and strength of the women who endured them. The book offers a nuanced understanding of the complexities of life in the Ottoman imperial harem and the struggles of women to navigate a patriarchal society. It argues that the harem should not be seen as a repressive institution that subjugated female agency but rather as a place of female power and influence. By doing so, the book challenges traditional assumptions about the role of women in the Ottoman Empire and offers a valuable contribution to our understanding of this fascinating period. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Sparse age-staining. Binding intact. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Demetra Kenneth Brown (1877 \u0096 1946) was a Greek-American author. Her early life was passed in close touch with the Turkish people. She ran away from home to escape an arranged marriage, and came to the United States with the family of a relative. ' In 1904 she was married to Kenneth Brown, novelist, and soon began to write. Her second book, Haremlik, published in 1909, commanded wide attention. It consisted of 10 studies of Turkish women. Amy Lawrence Lowell (1874 \u0096 1925) was an American poet of the imagist school. She posthumously won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1926. Lowell was a lesbian, and in 1912 she met the actress Ada Dwyer Russell, who would become her lover. Russell is the subject of many of Lowell's more erotic works, most notably the love poems contained in Two Speak Together, a subsection of Pictures of the Floating World. The two women traveled to England together, where Lowell met Ezra Pound, who at once became a major influence and a major critic of her work. Pound considered Lowell's embrace of Imagism to be a kind of hijacking of the movement. Lowell has been linked romantically to writer Mercedes de Acosta, but the only evidence of any contact between them is a brief correspondence about a planned memorial for Duse. Lovely inscription by Amy Lowell to a Barbara Higginson \"in memory of our six days in Constantinople.\" This inscription is dated 1908, before Lowell met Russell! First edition book.
