World War I was predominantly a European war. The United States entered into the conflict in full force on the western front four years after the fighting began, at a time when the original belligerents were war~weary and exhausted. She engaged in large~scale military operations for only two months, September 12 to November 11, 1918. In the light of this imbalance, an attempt to describe the American contribution in a vacuum, or to present the war in Europe as a background for the American effort, would result in distortion. President Wilson Fights His War concentrates on the European aspects of the war, selecting the most important phases, and focusing on 1914 and 1918 more than on the individual intervening years. The book provides an authoritative new assessment of Woodrow Wilson's role as war President, of the state of the American nation at the outbreak of the war and at the point of her entry into it, and of the role and achievement of General Pershing as commander~in~chief in France. World War I was a war of coalitions, and America's first modern experience in such a war. This book shows that the United States, an early convert to the idea of an allied theater commander, made a great effort to adjust to the military programs and requirements of France and Great Britain, and that, as a result, she undertook an overly ambitious military program, the dimensions of which restricted what could be accomplished by the time of the armistice. Yet it points out that the very size of America's thrust discouraged and demoralized the Central Powers and helped bring the war to a close. The commitment of the American nation to the war irrevocably turned the balance of military power. Big battalions and productive factories triumphed. The war that began with the assassination of Franz Ferdinand at Sarajevo ended in armistice at Compiegne, leaving a Europe completely changed and America's role in the world drastically altered. It paved the way for Communism in Russia; Fascism in Italy, National Socialism in Germany~and World War II.
