Hard Cover. Condition: Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. 453 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map. "(E)mploys a comprehensive approach to the behavioral processes of the peoples of this important area of the world. At a time when much of the literature on the Middle East is either historical in nature or limited to specific target studies, Ailon Shiloh has compiled a volume of articles that integrate political, historical, economic, demographic, and health data into the study of culture and behavior. (His) introduction encapsulates a history of the area from the birth of civilization to the Six-Day-War of 1967. The articles that follow are written by a variety of perceptive scholars, many of whom are native to the Middle East or have lived and worked there for a number of years. The book is divided into five sections - The Distribution of Peoples, Cultures and Subcultures, Population Dynamics, Culture Change and Conservatism, and The Schoolteacher as Anthropologist - covering either the cultural history of the area or the effects of pressures toward fundamental culture change." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two tiny dints and light soiling on bottom of text block, minor soiling on fore-edge of text block, previous owner's name and erased pencil name on front free end paper, soft creases across contents page. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has moderate edgewear/wrinkling, chips and tears - some with creases, area of discoloration on spine, light rubbing and some tiny scuff marks - now protected in removable mylar sleeve.

First Edition
London, George Allen & Unwin Ltd., [1983]. Royal 8vo. Original burnt ochre boards in original pictorial dust-wrapper, map endpapers; pp. 228; numerous photographic plates, a near-fine copy; neat inscription, dated Dubai, 1985, to front initial blank. First published in 1949, this is the first abridged edition of a Kuwait and northern central Arabia classic. Dickson forms part of that tradition of British writers and travellers - Burton, Doughty, T.E. Lawrence, Bertram Thomas, H. St. John Philby, Gertrude Bell, Freya Stark, Thesiger - who became fascinated by Arabia and the Arabs, often espousing their causes and aspirations. Himself a fluent Arabic speaker, Dickson's friendship with such as Ibn Sa'ud and his travels in the Arabian peninsular resulted in the present work. A classic of the literature, it introduces the reader to the cultural life of Arabia, with chapters on hawking, food, smoking, pearl diving, nomad life, the Haj, the Arab horse, proverbs, and much else. Dickson throughout his writing expresses his deep admiration for Sheikh Salim Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah of Kuwait.
