The large fine map depicts the South, Midwest, and Canada. "Dr. Salzbacher toured the south first and went as far west as St. Louis. Later, he traveled east via Chicago. His primary concern was Roman Catholic institutions" (Graff). Specifically the German congregations which had complained bitterly at their treatment by the Irish Catholics. Salzbacher reported back to the Leopoldic Foundation tht the Germans received too little respect, had too few priests and desparately neede their own seminaries. His tour took him to "to St. Louis by way of the Ohio and Mississippi River and back across Illinois by stage to Vincennes." (Buck 373).
