Duffy (1898-1982), Warden of San Quentin State Prison in California, and a prominent opponent of capital punishment. Amongst his other reforms, Duffy eliminated dungeons and physical punishment, established a hobby-shop programme and prison newspaper, broadened educational facilities and job training, and introduced the first Alcoholics Anonymous chapter to any prison.
