For almost 7 decades, through numerous editions & revisions, Kobbe has been the most compendious, authoritative & internationally oriented guide available in English. Here this famous work has been entirely reset, expanded, revised & updated in a manner zestfully responsive to the explosion of enthusiasm for opera, w/ the stories of more than 300 of the world's great operas related in detail, complete w/ musical examples, & w/ 29 operas added to this edition. Every entry is headed by a detailed log of the dates, places & casts of the significant premieres & revivals of each work. Sensitive to the operas of all eras, Lord Harewood has doubled the Handel entries to reflect the many bicentennial revivals of hs works, & has given equal attention to such modern composers as Blitzstein, Ligeti, & Philip Glass. He has also rewritten & enhanced the accounts of other operas from Wagner's 'Rienzi' to Janacek's 'Jenufa'. * HIGH PRAISE: "I know of no single-volume operatic guide that can possibly compare with Kobbe. It is indispensable." -Bernard Levin "For the opera-minded the name of Kobbe is as significant as that of Fowler for the word-wary." -Irving Kolodin "Here is the most civilized, the most companionablE of all opera guides." -Nicholas Kenyon, The Observer "Indispensable. Everyone would do it slightly differently; who but Lord Harewood could do it so well?" -Rupert Christiansen, The Spectator * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: LORD HAREWOOD, a rare combination of operatic scholar & impresario, was Director of both of England's great opera establishments, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden & the English National Opera. This splendid edition is the culmination of his three decades as editor of "Kobbe" & his assiduous labor for & deep devotion to opera. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee & via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL to international destinations at our posted rates.
