Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Gorge Samuel Elgood (illustrator). Special Edition. This is the only existing record of the life and work of this exceptionally gifted artist. George Samuel Elgood ( 1841 - 1943 ), written by Eve Eckstein, who is the painter's great niece. As an art historian she has devoted the past 10 years to researching family records. She chronicles his life, travels and his research into garden history design in England and Italy. Her book is illustrated with many previously unpublished works. George Samuel Elgood was a man who traveled widely in order to paint gardens. Whether it was his home county of Kent or as far afield as Girgenti in Sicily, in nearly 40 years he was to paint over 1000 watercolors, mostly of gardens although his love of architecture is evident in many of his earlier works. He could be said to have been an early conservationist himself, both in Leicestershire and in Kent. .
