'Of the men who played a conspicuous part i n Irish affairs during the turbulent period between the outbreak of rebellion in 1641 and the Cromwellian conquest, few were more distinguished or more active than Ulick Burke, fifth earl of Clanricarde. A devout Catholic but also a confirmed royalist, one of the richest landowners in the kingdom, inclined to be English rather than Irish in his outlook, he turned to the king's advantage a strategically influential position between the royalist government and the Irish Catholics.'.
