Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Vol. I. Politics society administration. Vol. II. Economy and culture. Vol. III. Urbanization and urban development. 400 Years of Capital Dhaka and Beyond Volume 1, is a part of a three volume anthology on Dhaka, which is among the many publications being brought out by the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh to celebrate the 400th anniversary of capital Dhaka. It deals with the politics, society and administration of capital Dhaka during the years 1608-2008. All these aspects of Dhaka have been narrated in eighteen articles written by distinguished scholars on the subject. The first articles in the book so to say as a curtain raiser touches briefly upon the history of pre-Mughal Dhaka on the basis of epigraphic sources. This is followed by the others dealing with the detailed history of capital Dhaka during the last 400 years with special reference to politics, society, administration and urban life of the city. 400 Years of Capital Dhaka and Beyond: Economy and Culture, Volume II is a compilation of essays on a wide range of topics relating to the economy and culture of Dhaka for the last four hundred years of its existence as a capital city intermittently though. The economic and cultural history of Dhaka has been discussed in these essays, each under a specific chapter, with as much information as can be gleaned briefly to give a cohesiveness of the subject-matter with a single volume. Although the volume includes as many topics as may be required to publish a book complete by itself on the economic and cultural history of Dhaka covering four centuries, it may not be as complete as one may expect. The history of Dhaka is so colourful and fascinating that one may think of many more topics for inclusion in this volume. Because of the limitations of space and due to time-constraint even such interesting subjects as food habits and local customs have been left out more so because these have been taken up in other publications under the programme called Celebration of 400 Years of Capital Dhaka through Scholarly and Development Works. 400 Years of Capital Dhaka and Beyond. The present volume is the final volume and has been titled Urbanization and urban Development of Capital Dhaka. In this volume there are twenty-seven articles written by distinguished urban specialists, historians and urban planners. This particular volume traces the physical growth of capital Dhaka during the last 400 years and discusses various aspects of urbanization and urbanism of capital Dhaka. In these articles there are stories that are heartening and cheerful and others that are very depressing showing the complete absence of serious city planning by generations of city administrators and politicians in the past and also at the present.
