Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Arvilla Parker (illustrator). Reprint of 500 copies. 4to. Pp. 47. Introduction by Douglas S. Watson. Frontis. color illustration. Bound in decorated boards with title labels mounted on front cover and spine. Corners worn and bumped, slight foxing to free endpapers. Gilt on spine label dulled. A refined book production with exquisite typography. Edwards diary of his trip to the Pacific coast was published by the State Library of California in 1890 (COWAN, p. 192). This is a reprint of that diary, which Adams declares rare. Edwards was associated with Nathaniel Wyeth in fur hunting efforts, and Jason Lee and Daniel Lee, the Methodist missionaries as they set out for Oregon. Recognizing that "White Eagle" John McLoughlin lacked enough cattle for Hudson's Bay Fort Vancouver, for which McLoughlin served as Chief Factor, they decided to drive cattle northward from California to Champoeg. Magee, in his Catalogue of Some Five Hundred Examples . Grabhorn (#112), notes the headpiece was done by Arvilla Parker. ADAMS, Rampaging, 748; HOWES, E-66.
