Hardcover. Condition: Good Plus to Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair To Good. An omnibus edition of three of Tey's best mysteries, the title playing off an earlier threesome, "Three By Tey. "A Shilling for Candles" (1936) is the first mystery to feature Scotland Yard Inspector Alan Grant as he investigates the death of an actress; "The Singing Sands," (1952) set in a beautifully described rural Scotland, is Grant's last case. In between is "The Daughter of Time," (1951) voted by the Crime Writers' Association in 1990 as the "best mystery of all time." Book Club Edition, First Edition Thus. About 5 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches, 413 pages, including 2-page geneological chart of Richard III and the Plantagenets, at the end of the book. Light grey paper-covered boards with light red lettering and graphic design on front cover and spine. "Cock Robin Mystery" logo in lower right corner of front cover. Dustjacket shows graphic design on front panel with title in while lettering, author's name in black. Back panel has short essay by Rex Stout on reading and writing detective stories with a small photo of Tey on back flap. An error during printing caused a diagonal crease across back board, o/w only lightly bumped corners and touch of soiling. Text is complete, clean and unmarked. DJ shows considerable amount of wear along edges and at corners. Fold between back panel and back flap worn through in several places, back panel's white areas soiled. Early Edition. "Tey opened up the possibility of unconventional secrets. Homosexual desire, cross-dressing, sexual perversion - they were all hinted at, glimpsed in the shadows as a door closed or a curtain twitched. Tey was never vulgar nor titillating. Nevertheless, her world revealed a different set of psychological motivations." - Val McDermid in "The brillliant unconventional crime novels of Josephine Tey"(The Telegraph, July 2015) Second edition copy printed in 1953. Orignal first issue DJ with "9s 6d" price on lower front flap. A nice copy of this early detective novel from the famed Scottish author. A few minor chips to DJ edges.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Jacket by Ray Russell (illustrator). 1st Edition. First published in 1948, this is an eighth impression of 1975. Ex library but with quite discreet stamps on copyright page, bottom of page block and rear endpapers. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, very slight lean, price clipped but price replaced with publisher's sticker (£9.95), no personal inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall quite a reasonable copy of Josephine Tey's classic thriller. 272pp. Marion Sharpe and her mother seem an unlikely duo to be found on the wrong side of the law. Quiet and ordinary, they have led a peaceful and unremarkable life at their country home, The Franchise. Unremarkable that is, until the police turn up with a demure young woman on their doorstep. Not only does Betty Kane accuse them of kidnap and abuse, she can back up her claim with a detailed description of the attic room in which she was kept, right down to the crack in its round window. But there's something about Betty Kane's story that doesn't quite add up. Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard is stumped. And it takes Robert Blair, local solicitor turned amateur detective, to solve the mystery that lies at the heart of The Franchise Affair.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-Near Fine. Hoffman, Lawrence H. (illustrator). First Edition. First edition, thus. [originally published by Methuen, 1929, as by Gordon Daviot] Insp. Alan Grant; London. Her first book and the first title in the Murder Revisited series. Illustrated by Lawrence H. Hoffman. Book has tape remains at covers and tape ghosts at endpapers, along with black remains at bottom of endpapers and inside covers from old style dust protector. Dust jacket is in beautiful shape, light crimping at lower corner, flap corners narrowly clipped retaining $ 2.75 price, still very bright. Very scarce in dust jacket of any kind and especially one in this good shape. "A long line had formed for the standing-room-only section of the Woffington Theatre. London s favorite musical comedy of the past two years was finishing its run at the end of the week. Suddenly, the line began to move, forming a wedge before the open doors as hopeful theatergoers nudged their way forward. But one man, his head sunk down upon his chest, slowly sank to his knees and then, still more slowly, keeled over on his face. Thinking he had fainted, a spectator moved to help, but recoiled in horror from what lay before him: the man in the queue had a small silver dagger neatly plunged into his back. With the wit and guile that have made Inspector Grant a favorite of mystery fans, the inspector sets about discovering just how a murder occurred among so many witnesses, none of whom saw a thing." --publisher. Book.
