Hardcover. Condition: Good. Oversized hardcover. Brown cloth over boards with gold lettering to spine. Dated 1883 on copyright and title page. 1101 pages. Good condition. Binding is nice and strong. Pages are evenly and lightly toned throughout, but free of marks or writing. Covers are discolored with age and some light rubbing. Nothing too extreme or abnormal for the age of the book. The title page has been neatly re-attached and the outline map is missing, but no other pages are gone. There are a few neatly written pencil notes to the front free endpaper. Overall good condition. Rubbing and wear to boards, primarily along edges and corners. Part of original leather spine preserved. Hinges remain in good condition and text block remains bound well with minor wear. New pastedowns and end pages added at front and back. Light markings and marginalia. Includes 2 color maps of Lancaster County, along with a variety of black-and-white illustrations of local places and portraits of influential residents. Possible loss of tissue guards to some portraits. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. Contents bright and neat; all folding maps, lithographed views and engraved portraits present and in attractive condition. Some tissue guards chipped or missing. The heavy leather repair/rebacking is too stiff for the joints and there is separation between endpages at front and rear with the front split nearly complete. A basic rebacking with more pliable leather or cloth would be deisrable, but on balancethe contents are very well preserved. Al edges gilt. Light to moderate rubbing an skinning to the original leather corners. Prior ownership of prominent Lancastrian, J. Guy Eshleman, with his ink stamp to the front endpage.
