Full Leather. Condition: Very Good. A conditionally very good+ example of this uncommon NH Gazetteer. First Edition, Printing & Issue complete with all 9 original Plates the folding map, & 1 smaller illustration on the title page. The large folding map of New Hampshire (from Phillip Carrigain's Map, 1816: In White Mountain history, the map is significant for incorporating the first illustrations of the mountains, in engravings by Abel Bowen after original drawings by James Kidder. (These were later reused several times, first in John Farmer and Jacob B. Moore's 1823 A Gazetteer of the State of New-Hampshire.) They purport to be accurate, though the view of the mountains from Shelburne demonstrably is not, and the engraving of Crawford Notch is printed in mirror image.) is a correct uncolored first printing. Later printings were colored (likely) by the publisher and after-the-fact by owners and dealers in an attempt to make an already excellent map even more striking. I prefer the unadulterated state. Bound in the original full calf gilt banded spine (most of gilding rubbed off), with plain off-white end papers. Owner notes on rear ep in pencil. Photos on request. A very good example with nothing either added nor taken away. NOTE: The last illustration 'Notch of the Mountains' is printed on thicker/better quality paper than other examples that I have examined, about 20 copies to date over the past 30 years or so. The illustrations are as follows: 1: Title page: Coarse Etching or block print of a lake scene with a boat laden with goods and an oarsman. 2: p 12/13 Comparative view of the heights of mountains and etc. in New Hampshire. 3: p 30/31: Dartmouth College Hanover. 4: p 40/40 New Hampshire State House Concord. 5: p 132/133 Exeter Academy. 6: p 158/149: Great Boars Head & Hampton Beach. 7: p 152/153: Medical College. 8: p 216/217: View of Portsmouth from the Navy Yard. 9: p 258/259: View of the White Mountains from Shelburne. 10: p 262/263: Notch of the Mountains. Size: 12mo - (small). Book.
