Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP, MDCCXLIX on the title page, Errata slip bound in between the two pages following the last page of the text). Take a look at the photos of the covers. They have held up extraordinarily well, look a lot better than the few others shown for sale. They are a light blue color. They are blind stamped on the front and rear. There is a gilt design on the front that is nicely bright. The lettering and design on the spine is also nicely bright. The spine is somewhat toned. There is some crinkling at its top edge with a couple of tiny tears. The bottom edge has the same crinkling with the one tear a little larger than the ones at the top edge. The covers have only mild handling soiling. The cover edges are in very good shape, no conspicuous rubbing. The corners have held up very well, one very small spot of rub-through at the two front ones, and a speck-sized one at the rear top corner, no rubbing at the rear bottom one. The page edges look very good. You can see that the top one had an original topstain, some of it has faded over time. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is decent. The blank front end paper is attached only over its top third. There is a space at the juncture between the front inside cover and this end paper as well as between the front cover and the verso of the frontispiece with webbing showing in both instances. The juncture between the frontispiece and the title page looks very good. There is a space again the juncture between two of the facing pages in the List of Subscribers section, both pages being tightly bound from top to bottom. Then almost all the pages are nicely, tightly bound up to page 96-97 where there is a space at the juncture, though both pages are again tightly bound from top to bottom. And this is again the case between pages 112-113 with the pages also tightly bound from top to bottom. However, after that all the way through to the last page, 363, the pages are all decently to tightly bound without spaces at their junctures. All in all, pretty good. The juncture between the rear cover and rear end paper has only a very slight space and the rear covers are tightly bound. The front cover has a little bit of give, but is still solidly bound. The pages are exceptionally clean. I saw no more than a few spots. Unlike a few other copies of this book, there is no foxing here, none at all. Creasing is not much of an issue. There is crinkling here and there. There are three full-page illustrations, one is the frontispiece drawing of Bernard Barton. At the start of the Letters section there is a very nice print of 'Woodbridge', and in the Poems section another very nice one of The Valley of Fern. All three illustrations are protected by tissue guards which are in good shape. Attached only at its bottom corner, on the front inside cover, is a label on which is printed (calligraphy) 'Private Library of W. H. Stout' and he's penned in the price paid, also an assigned number. Underneath that there's another statement of ownership, this one a penciled (in little letters) name and the date, and Columbus, Ohio. also, there is a tiny bookseller label at the top corner of the same front inside cover. What I can make out : 'Sold by H. Scott, 11 English (Street)'. The area under where the Private Library label is no longer affixed is perfectly smooth, no residue, looks just like the rest of the page. W. H. Stout did pen the number and price ('lld') in small letters underneath part of it. There are no markings in the book. No attachments other than the two just referenced. And no writing other than the two instances just referenced, all on the front inside cover. There are a lot of subscribers listed over 24 unnumbered pages. Included among them are William Harrison Ainsworth, Thomas Carlyle, Charles Dickens, William Cowper, George Crabbe, W. M. Thackeray, and William Wordsworth. Many correspondents as well, including Robert Southey, Charles Lamb and Sir Walter Scott.
