Condition: Very Good. This fascinating map of Illinois presents 'The Land of Lincoln' just a few years after Honest Abe's assassination. The state played a major role in the Civil War that had recently concluded, sending over a quarter million soldiers to join the Union Army. The robust rail network visible throughout the image moved troops and war material quickly over long distances, ready for delivery where needed (primarily in the Western Theater). Townships are individually labeled and delicately colored, with an interesting variety of place names and geographic features labeled within. An inset in the lower left shows Cook County and the vicinity of Chicago, in the northeastern corner of the state. The map was published in New York in 1867 by George Woolworth (G.W.) and Charles B. (C.B.) Colton. Sheet Width (in) 17.25 Sheet Height (in) 27.25 Condition Description The paper has become somewhat brittle with age, resulting in several large chips and a few tears around the margins. They are away from the image, which remains clean except for a few tiny spots here and there. Good to very good overall.
