NOTE: herein are two different paper types, white and brown (suggesting that the brown paper may have been surplus from the 1937 editioin). Here are descriptions of many of the custom, manners, ceremonies, festivals, arts and crafts of the Japanese besides numerous other subjects. 355 .illustrations. NOTE: this work first appeared in 1934, and through 1937, and calling this 1946 appearnce its 5th printing; but, its compiler, Mr. Yamaguchi, the manager of the Fujiya Hotel, refers to this as the second edition. How much was it revised for the post-war tourist trade?.

These volumes are in English and associated with the Fujiya Hotel in Miyanoshita, Hakone. Ilustrations throughout. Fifth Edition. Volume 1 - Sewn silk wrapper, dust jacket is ripped and loose, with 3 1/2 inches missing from bottom of spine. Several pages are creased but intact, foxing on pages, some pages untrimmed, but no printing within fold. Previous owner's name and date of 1947 on front endpaper. 200pp. Volume 2 - Dust jacket has some small rips, previous owner's name and date on front endpaper. 207pp.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. All text is in English. Both volumes are held in Japanese style folded cases with bone "button" fasteners (one missing from volume 2). Cases show signs of wear. Both book in Near Fine and unmarked condition. Volume 1 is a 1937 4th printing of the 1934 edition and volume 2 is a first printing of the 1st edition of 1937. Presumably these were given to hotel guests pre-war. Very comprehensive information on local customs, history, manners etc. 400pp over the two volumes.

First printing. 207 pages, 389 illustrations, mostly photos, index, octavo format, side-stitched into silvery patterned silk covers, in a cream linen three-panel folding portfolio case, with floral decoration and paper spine label, secured with ivory clasps. A superb production. Book itself is in New unread condition. The case shows some soiling from handling but is not overly worn, nor damaged. LAID IN: four original Fujiya Hotel menus from 1935 and 1938 with interesting educational material on the back about Japanese art, proverbs, etc. The original owner of the book was a Canadian diplomat in Tokyo in the 1930s.

A charming introduction to Japan for the foreign visitors of the time, explaining Japanese traditional customs, manners, history, arts, food, festivals, geography, architecture etc. Very comprehensive, it comes as a FINE brocade-covered, 200 page limp paperback book. Very thin paper. Very clean and neat English text. It comes with its VERY GOOD dark blue cloth covered hardback folder, lined with beige and silver sprinkled paper and with two ivory toggles to hold it together. It has some fading to spine and front and a chip or two. Vol. 2 . 1939. As above, also FINE, but Frederic de Garis is not mentioned as the writer. It is also SIGNED WITH DEDICATION BY MR YAMAGUCHI and has a loose photograph of him and his astonishing white mustachios . This also has a neat silk brocade cover but the GOOD folding outer casing is pinky beige, also with its little ivory toggles but is more faded and worn than Vol. 1 and the front has some pale staining. Priced at £150 GBP for the two volumes together.
