Hardcover. Condition: g. Reprint. Quarto. LXV, [3], 314, [2], 208pp. Original red cloth with gold lettering on spine and front cover. Originally published in 1924, this remarkable work is a collection of more than 300 Hebrew stories - the largest collection of its kind compiled in the Middle Ages - so entitled by M. Gaster, who discovered them in manuscript. Each story is related, in content and ideas, with those preceding and following it, thus forming an interconnected chain of stories. Abraham's search for the true God, for instance, is preceded by the story of his destruction of the idols and subsequent trial by Nimrod and is followed by the account of Hadrian's attempt to present himself as a god.Lower edges of binding slightly damp-stained. Lower edges of pages sporadicly and slightly rippled throughout (due to damp exposure). Binding and interior in overall good+ condition.
