Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Profusely illustrated with b&w photos (illustrator). 1st. Large crease front cover tail foredge corner, small tear on the front corner - bottom right. Very small tear rear cover tail edge. Pages are very clean, binding is tight. Our understanding of Lachaise has been severely limited by a number of interrelated factors: his early and untimely death; the unfashionable character of his explorations; the impressionistic nature of criticism of his work, save only the long unavailable Lincoln Kirstein monograph for the Museum of Modern Art; and the absence of an important exposure of his sculpture in a manner which permitted easy access and encouraged study. Mme. Isabel Lachaise, the artist widow, conserve the content of the studio-workshop as best she could. She served the artist's reputation in every way possible to her. Were it not for her faith and effort he would hardly be possible to piece together the story of his life and evolution of his art. With the sound advice of Lincoln Kirstein, Mme. Lachaise deposited her correspondence, scrapbooks and memorabilia in the library of American Letters , Yale University. She tenaciously held the whole body of Lachaise plasters together under her control. From the preface by author Gerald Nordland.
