Second edition, revised. Folio. (xxxviii), 30, 29-30, 29-1630, [1631-32], (46) pp, bound without the front and rear blanks. Eighteenth century blindstamped reversed calf, spine rebacked to style and the original gilt lettered red label preserved, late 19th century book label of S.L. Nussey of Potternewton Hall to the front pastedown and their inscription to the verso of the title page, mid-eighteenth century ownership inscription of a John Gill to the same page quoting the price he paid for the binding, the likely slightly later inscription of a George Gill dated 1774 to the rear pastedown, a handful of pages with brief early handwritten annotations. Fine engraved title page, head and tail pieces, and over 2,700 woodcuts of plants, a quarter of pp. 491-2 wanting and sometime replaced in facsmile. Title page laid down with slight marginal loss to the upper edge, foot and fore edge shaved close but the engraved area essentially complete, occasional browning, small ink blot to pp. 820-21, pp. 909-12 on a lighter paper stock, possibly supplied from another copy of the same edition, the illustration on p.912 with a hint of old colour, blotchiness to page 1103, decreasingly so on the adjacent leaves, slight marginal loss to pp. 1461-2 and 1473-76, the five leaves featuring the "Table of English Names" browner and more fragile than the other rear index leaves, final leaf with marginal repairs, a few scuffs and marks to the covers, a decent copy overall. A surgeon by trade, Gerard also had charge of several important gardens, including that of Lord Burghley and of the newly founded College of Physicians. His Herbal, which was first published in 1597, remains one of the most famous English Natural History books and became a standard work for botanists for centuries. Relying on several other contemporary sources it is not without errors, many of which were corrected by Thomas Johnson, a London apothecary, for the second edition of 1633, of which this is a revised issue. "Gerard contributed greatly towards the advancement of the knowledge of plants in England. [he] wrote about plants largely for their medicinal qualities, but also drew attention to their decorative value. He paid attention to plants as a source of food. Above all this herbalist knew how to write, and while much has been been written of his faults as a botanist, of the charm of the writings there can be little dispute" (Henrey). ESTC, S122175. Henrey, I, 156, pp.36-54.

Rilegato. Condition: quasi ottimo. seconda edizione. London, printed by Adam Islip, Joice Norton and Richard Whitakers, 1633. In-Folio (34 cm x 22 cm). Ppè. (36), 1630 (i.e. 1634), (50). Third edition. Folio. 340x225mm. pp. [40], 30, 29-30, 29-402, 373-1630, [48]. [72]. Illustrated throughout with woodcuts. Engraved title page by John Payne. Bound by C. Kalthoeber (label on verso of front free endpaper) in "russia extra" with a border of continuous "drawer-handle" design in blind. Inside this is a gilt double fillet enclosing a further, smaller "drawer-handle" design. At the corners of the outer border are the Beckford and Hamilton crests, this book having been in the collection of William Beckford who used two crests, a heron's head with a fish in its beak (the Beckford crest) and an oak tree with a saw which was the Hamilton crest, his younger daughter having married the Duke of Hamilton. Rebacked with original spine laid down. Spine decorated in gilt and blind and lettered in gilt to the second compartment. Turn-ins decorated with a Greek key pattern in gilt. All edges gilt. Front pastedown has armorial bookplate of Archibald Philip Earl of Rosebery. On the verso of the front free endpaper is a manuscript note in Rosebery's hand which reads "R. Beckford Sale. Lot 115" and the Sotheby's catalogue entry from the Beckford sale is pasted onto the front pastedown. This copy was sold in the "Second Portion" of the Beckford Library on 11th December 1882. Joints and corners strengthened and repaired. Slight bumping and rubbing to corners and some marks to lower cover but otherwise a very good copy. Internally near fine save for an old stain on G2. John Gerard first published his Herball in 1597 and although it was a success, it was regarded as not entirely accurate. After Gerard's death in 1612, Thomas Johnson set about revising the work. 1633 saw the first appearance of his "enlarged and amended" edition which included Plantin's much improved woodcuts. This is a particularly nice copy, bound by one of the great German emigre binders and with a superb provenance. ESTC. S122175.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1597 1st John Gerarde Herball Plants English Herbal Illustrated Stirpium Botany Over 2100 INCREDIBLE Woodcuts / comp@$40,000+ John Gerard, also spelt John Gerarde, (c. 1545 1612) was a botanist and herbalist. He maintained a large herbal garden in London. His chief notability is as the author of a big 1484 pages and heavily illustrated Herball, or Generall Historie of Plantes. First published in 1597, it was the most widely circulated botany book in English in the 17th century. Herball, or Generall Historie of Plantes was often thought to be an English translation of Dodoen s Stirpium ; however, it was later discovered that Gerarde was brought in to finish the work of a Robert Priest. (see below for more thorough explanation of history) We find (uncolored) examples of this work for sale elsewhere for $23,000! We find a Sothebys auction record hand colored, for $40,000+ Main author: John Gerarde Title: The Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes. Published: London : John Norton, 1597. Language: Latin Notes & contents: 1st edition of most famous English herbal Contains portrait of Gerarde 2139 illustrated woodcut engravings Lacks only the following pages: o Engraved title page (replaced in facsimile) o Three prelims following title o pp. 15/16; pp. 983/984 + 19 various leaves from indices at end Provenance: Alexander O Driscoll Taylor (1832-1910, of Belfast, Ireland, booklabel, but died Newport , Rhode Island, USA); Robert Magill Young (1851-1925, of Belfast, inscription). The history of the production of Gerarde's Herball has not been entirely worked out. It seems that the publisher had commissioned Dr. Robert Priest to translate Dodoens' Stirpium historiae pemptades sex (1583) into English, but that he had died before completing the task. John Gerarde was then brought in, and finished the translation, while changing the system of classification from that of Dodoens (a pharmacological one) to that of Mathias de Lobel (an attempt at a natural system), and adding notes and observations of his own. The vast majority of the woodcuts were hired from the Frankfurt publisher of Tabernaemontanus. At one point Norton brought in Lobel to correct some of Gerarde's more egregious errors (Lobel claimed to have discovered over 1000). Gerarde's own contribution may be no more than his appealing Elizabethan prose style and his description of the 'Virginian potato'. One of the few woodcuts that is original to this work is in fact the first illustration of the potato. The Tabernaemontanus cuts were based on the images of Fuchs, Brunfels, Mattioli, and the Flemish botanists published by Plantin (Dodoens, L'Écluse, and others). Interestingly, the portrait of Gerarde, who is depicted aged 53 holding a potato flower, is dated 1598. It is by William Rogers, and exists both in an unsigned state, and signed 'WR' (as here).
