Williams, leaf 129 / 130 has a machine-made hole in the bottom margin, not affecting the text, significant foxing. Embossed "House Document" on top cover. Slight wear to binding, tight. Illustrated with 16 chromolithographs by Ackerman New York, drawn by various artists. These two naval lieutenants split their exploring parties into two groups to survey a greater amount of the Amazon River Valley. This, Part 1, covers Lt. Herndon's travels. Later, as captain of the S. S. Central America, also known as the "Ship of Gold", in 1857, he perished when that ship foundered in a hurricane, with the loss of 425 lives.
