First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Susette La Flesche Tibbles (illustrator). First edition. 24mo, 94pp., rose cloth, nicked front free endpaper. Scarce. The Treaty of 1854 passed the tribal lands around Omaha over to the U.S. Government. This book has biographies of each Chief. Only one chief, Village Maker, who feared cameras, is not represented here by a photograph. The lengthy biography of Joseph La Flesche, Chief Iron Eye, tells how he was converted to Christianity by Fr. Hamilton. John L. Webster's "Preface" asserts that the drawings and two color illustrations by Susette La Flesche Tibbles is the first artistic work by an American Indian ever published. A member of the Ponca Tribe, she was educated in New Jersey before returning to Nebraska. Known as Inshta Theumba (Bright Eyes), she lectured against the forced relocation of the tribes. She married Thomas Tibbles, editor of the Omaha Herald. Susette Tibbles is in the Nebraska Hall of Fame, where she is described as "the first woman to speak out for the cause of Native Americans." There are two folk stories: one, about the Rabbit and the Turtle, and another, "Dream Woman", told by Iron Eye's wife, Waoo-winchtcha, and translated by her daughter ( and Susette's sister), Dr. Susan Picotte, physician of the Omaha tribe, and the first First Native American Female Physician ( also in the Nebraska Hall of Fame). [ Soliday II, 454].
