Hardcover. Condition: Good+. Dan Beard, A. B. Frost, B. W. Clinedinst, Frederick Dielman, Peter Newell, F. M. Seinor, T. J. Fogerty, C. H. Warren, A. G. Reinhart, F. Berkeley Smith, C. Allan Gilbert (illustrator). Early Reprint. 8vo. Pp. 7-712. Frontis. photograph of the author on the deck of a steamship, Illustrated throughout with black & white illustrations, sketches, and photographs. Attractively bound in blue cloth with spine stamped with gilt lettering; front cover features a mounted color illustration of an elephant bordered with gilt flourishes. Loss to lower quarter of illustration; top edge a bit dust-soiled; slight wear to edges of cloth. Withal, a tight, well preserved copy. First published in 1897, and sometimes titled More Tramps Abroad. The frontis. features a caption facsimile of Twain's handwriting: "Be good and you will be lonesome - Mark Twain."If travel books constitute a comfy substitute for the actual effort of travelling, the armchair voyager is doubly rewarded with not only Twain's acute and humorous observations, but the experience of traveling during the late-Victorian era.In writing about the bright, poetic clothing in Sri Lanka (Ceylon of Twain's day), he writes of seeing Ceylonese girls, from a Christian missionary school, wearing European uniforms: ''I looked at my womenfolk's clothes . . . and was ashamed to be seen in the street with them. Then I looked at my own clothes, and was ashamed to be seen in the street with myself.'' Such is the ability of Twain to impart his view, along with a critique of Western imperialism.A presentable copy, now protected with a clear, removable archival jacket.
