Book First Edition
Hardback. Condition: Very Good -. First Edition. 1935. First edition in English. 286pp. and 62 black and white illustrations, both on plates and within the text (all listed plates are present). There is a 16 page publisher's catalogue at the end of the book. Albert Leo Schlageter (1894-1923) was a German military officer who joined a right-wing Freikorps group after World War I and became famous for acts of post-war sabotage against French occupational forces. Schlageter was arrested for sabotaging a section of railroad track and executed by the French military. The manner of his death fostered an aura of martyrdom around him, which was cultivated by German nationalist groups, in particular the Nazi Party. In Nazi Germany, he was commemorated as a national hero. Written by a comrade of Schlageter, this book is an account of the activities of a group of young Germans who in the Communist revolution which threatened Germany immediately after the First World War, banded themselves into a free company of volunteers headed by the young leader, Hauenstein. The company, which was known as the Heinz Organization, was active in Silesia and later in the Ruhr territory, where Schlageter was executed. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling on the boards and a large water stain around the bottom spine corner of the front board that has caused loss of colour to the cloth. The bottom corners are lightly bumped and there is heavier bumping to the spine ends. The fore edge of both boards have some light dents. The spine is faded together with about 1/2" of the spine edge of the rear board. The contents are tight and clean with scattered foxing, including marks to the title-page. The foxing is mostly light although a few pages and the fore edge of the text block are more heavily affected. There is some red straining on the bottom edge of the front fixed endpaper and the rear fixed endpaper has faint traces of some numbers and a bookseller's label together with a very faint blind stamp on the bottom edge that indicates the book may have been in a circulating library (possibly Harrods Ltd.). There is no inscription. The book is ion a clear glassine wrapper, probably not as issued, and this has some soiling with chipping and a little loss at the top of the spine and top corners.
