(1858-1928) U.S. Army officer and Civil Engineer; best known for his administration and supervision of the construction and the opening of the Panama Canal. Uncommon Typed Letter Signed, "G. W. Goethals," on Isthmian Canal Commission letterhead. One page, quarto. Culebra. December 4, 1913. Fine condition. Goethals writes to "Mr. William H. Rideing, The Youths' Companion, Boston, Mass": "Dear Mr. Rideing: I am in receipt of yours of the24th ultimo and regret that my time is so occupied with other matters that I do not see how it will be possible for me at this time to undertake the preparation of an article." The grand opening of the canal was just under 8 months away. No doubt Goethals had little time to write an article for the youth magazine.

Written by the chief engineer of the Panama Canal to the Clerk of the Committee on Appropriations of the US Congress, in part: ".It appears that Mr. Smith sent the estimates to the office by a special messenger before eight o'clock on a Sunday morning. This messenger delivered them to a messenger in the office without stating they were urgent, and it did not dawn upon this messenger (an American negro by the way) that a package.contained anything of importance." Natural folds; tape stains in upper corners. Very good condition.
