Printed wrappers, small 4to, 143 pp. A "monograph which more than any other single work indicated the new direction that the study of incunabula was to take in the next half-century.Goldschmidt was deeply versed in the methodology of the identification of fifteenth-century printing materials by their types, steeped also in the extensive form of bibliographical description developed for the Gesamtkatalog. Goldchmidt's talents, however, extended far beyond impeccable technique. In his relatively brief study he leaves the confines of a well-established methodology to explore questions of survival and dissemination of texts, contemplating the obstructions raised by cataloguing traditions which often block the way to complicated materials, and suggesting new systematic approaches. Even now, when modern technology makes such departures from the orthodoxy of cataloguing rules more feasible, Goldschmidt's daring approaches have not been carried out on the scale he suggested. But his themes of survival, transmission, distribution, and modern access remain central to the study of incunabula." - Lotte Hellinga in the Book Encompassed, 1992. Wrappers creased, edgeworn and a little marked, foot of spine slightly torn, contents Good.
