Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition. Oblong folio, cream canvas; issued without a dust jacket Art critic Franz Schulze included Golub among a collection of artists he named the "Monster Roster" for their use of "gruesome, expressive figuration, fantasy and mythology, and existential thought." And that art had to show a connection to the real world to be relevant to a viewer or to society. Monster Roster was a precursor to the Chicago Imagists. After a period of portrayals of politicians, dictators, and religious figures, Golub's work, as here, showed themes of violent aggression, racial inequality. He was called by one critic, "a painter of darkness". Laid in are two color photographs of Golub at work, and resting. Note: Golub was the leader of Monster Roster. The first full-scale museum exhibition of it was in Chicago in 2016.
