About this Item: Privately printed, Wellesley Hills, 1949, one of only 100 copies, inscribed by the author: "To Tap, sportsman, editor and friend, 'Five Aces' to me. Grampa". Illustrated with drawings and photographs. 6.25" x 9.25". Green cloth. The spine has split about half of its length, and has been crudely repaired, bookplate of Horace G. (Tap) Tapply on the endpaper. Approximately 200 pp. Primarily stories of grouse hunting in New England, but also some woodcock and duck hunting, fishing for landlocked salmon, muskie in the St. Lawrence, etc. Tap Tapply was one of the author's grouse hunting companions. The book is accompanied by a copy of Upland Days; 50 years of bird hunting in New England by William G. Tapply, 2000. The first chapter of Upland Days is about Partridge Shortenin', and tagging along with Tap Tapply and "Grandpa Grouse" on their grouse hunting trips in New Hampshire. Laid-in is a 6 page article by Bill Tapply, from 'Shooting Sportsman', titled "Grampa Grouse; remembering Gorham Cross and his Grouse Shorteners Association". The article features a color photograph of Gorham Cross with a gun and his setter in the field, and Bill Tapply refers to this copy of Partridge Shortenin' (which was owned by both Tap Tapply and Bill Tapply, and which I bought at the auction of Bill Tapply's books). "I have been offered a lot of money for my tattered copy" (Tapply). This article was reprinted in Upland Days. Rare. With a damaged spine, the covers are only fair, but the interior is very good. A unique copy. Two books housed in a custom partitioned box. Seller Inventory # 33241
