Frontispiece steel engraving of the author with tissue guard plus 12 full-page captioned wood engravings with tissue guards throughout. Brown cloth stamped in blind over beveled boards with letters in gilt on the front cover and the spine and with a gilt cartouche containing the title on the front cover and elaborate gilt decorations on the spine. Wear to extremities with the corners just rubbed through, top and bottom of spine beginning to fray, spine gilt slightly dulled, cover gilt bright, all engravings present and in fine condition with all tissue guards intact, previous owner's signature (John L. Scudder, Dec 22, 1881)--all in all in extraordinary condition for a book so old and fragile. John Bartholomew Gough [1817-1886] was a one time bookbinder and alcoholic, who, under the influence of a kindly Quaker, took the Temperance pledge and spent most of the remainder of his life speaking on temperance in the United States and England, attracting thousands to hear his eloquent speeches. SUNLIGHT AND SHADOW is obviously biographical.
