Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. 360 pp. Tightly bound. Corners not bumped. Text free of markings. No ownership markings. No dust jacket. Remainder mark bottom fore-edge. 12 x 10.25 inches. 120 pages. Original white boards; pictorial dust jacket. First edition. "Working with ordinary people who answered ads in local papers, posing them in their nondescript homes or unexceptional landscapes and using relatively simple equipment, Katy Grannan alchemizes these factors into extraordinary photographs. Disarming for their directness and for the provocative but casual nudity on display, her pictures capture the spirit of her subjects in the manner of Diane Arbus, but they also draw upon the artificial, posed tableaux of Gregory Crewdson and, indeed, art history. The posture of the tattooed and tanned (and nude) figure in Mike, a 2003 portrait which appeared in the 2004 Whitney Biennial, resembles nothing so much as the awkward repose of the desert nomad in Henri Rousseau's Sleeping Gypsy. In this first monograph, over half of the photographs are previously unpublished, providing a fresh depth to our understanding of this already widely known and accomplished young artist. Sitting on a dirt road in a knit bikini, standing defiantly in a corner of a cheaply paneled living room, leaning languidly against a chain-link fence, Grannan's photographs convey the dark side that we all have as well as the need to be recognized as unique individuals" (the publisher). A near-fine copy, with some very light rubbing to jacket.

Large folio (15 x 12 inches). [50] pages. 23 large-format color plates. Printed wrappers. "Grannan's large format color portraits depict subjects the artist describes as "new pioneers," northern Californians who struggle to define themselves under the scrutiny of relentless sunlight. California serves as both a literal and metaphorical backdrop for Grannan's new photographs. It is a mythical destination and a real end-point where sunshine illuminates both the abject and the joyful. In The Westerns, Grannan explores the uneasy relationship between fixed photographic portraiture and her subjects' mercurial identities. The photographs are replete with ambiguity and contradiction: they are evidence of an invented" (Fraenkel Gallery). A fine copy with a few small marks on rear wrapper.

Hardcover with dustjacket. 300 x 255 mm (9.875 x 11.5 inch). 112 pages. 70 colour photos. Photographs by Katy Grannan. Essay by Jan Avgikos. First monograph on this contemporary photographer. "Katy Grannan s striking portraits capture the desire of her subjects to offer themselves up to the camera lens. Each of her well-known series "Poughkeepsie Journal," "Dream America," and "Morning Call" began with a simple ad placed by Grannan in local newspapers: "Art Models. Artist/Photographer (female) seeks people for portraits. No experience necessary. Leave msg." After an initial telephone conversation, Grannan travels to the caller s home. Photographing her models in their own surroundings, she pays meticulous attention to the elements of their domestic settings: wood paneling, patterned wallpaper, and other mundane but often telling details. The subjects choose to remain clothed, to model nude, or to pause somewhere in between, working with Grannan to arrive at the pose. The resulting images reflect the intensity of the relationship between artist and model. With subjects centrally framed and directly facing the camera, each image resonates with the tension of a first encounter. In Grannan s series "Sugar Camp Road" and her most recent work, she moves the exercise outdoors, using a municipal park as the backdrop. Even though the parklands that serve as her set bring the private encounters of her earlier series into the public landscape, she maintains a delicate yet charged sense of intimacy."Katy Grannan is one of the most original and compelling portraitists working today. The last time I was this uncomfortable and thrilled by a book of portraits was when I first opened Diane Arbus s monograph thirty years ago." (Richard Misrach) Katy Grannan was born in Arlington, Massachusetts, in 1969. She received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, in 1991 and her M.F.A. from Yale University in 1999. Her work has been featured in multiple group exhibitions; she was one of five photographers selected for the 2004 Whitney Biennial. Solo exhibitions of Grannan s work have been held at Lawrence Rubin Greenberg Van Doren Fine Art in New York (2000 and 2003) and other galleries. She recently received the 2004 Baum Award for Emerging American Photographers, the Theater Gallery of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (2004). This place, where the American Dream comes to a screeching halt, counts the many feral cats and dogs as victims of this unforgiving landscape in California?s Central Valley. Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Limited edition of 800 stamp-numbered copies. Four volumes sharing the following format: Printed, die-cut, French-fold wrappers; no dust jacket as issued. Unpaginated (40 pp.), with black-and-white and four-color plates throughout. Photographs by Mark Steinmetz, Dru Donovan, Elaine Stocki and Katy Grannan. Designed by Paul Schiek. 8 x 6 inches. New in publisher's shrink wrap. From the publisher: "Mark Steinmetz's book Philip & Micheline documents the end of life as experienced by his parents. Steinmetz uses his camera to share the moments he has witnessed, within which viewers find an intimate portrait of a family's loss. Steinmetz was born in 1961; he received a BA from Wesleyan University and an MFA from Yale University. He has had numerous books published by Nazraeli and his work is in the collections of major museums across the United States including the New York Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Steinmetz received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1994 and now lives in Athens, Georgia where he spends most of his time making photo books. Dru Donovan presents an investigation of mourning in her book, Lifting Water. The tableaus explore the rituals of caregiving while shifting perspectives between the caregiver and the cared for. Donovan focuses on the psychological weight of physical proximity alongside emotional isolation. Donovan was born in 1981; she received a BFA in photography from California College of the Arts and an MFA in photography from Yale University, where she was awarded the Richard Benson prize for excellence. Donovan was included in Wallpaper Magazine's Graduate Directory of emerging talent to watch, her work is included in reGeneration2: Tomorrow's Photographers Today, published by Thames & Hudson and she will be included in the 2010 California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art. Donovan now lives and works in San Francisco, California. Katy Grannan's book, N., coincides with Grannan's most recent work; making short films. N.'s cinematic, or time-based structure features Grannan's long-time subject, Nicole, whom after five years of collaborations determined it was time they make some 'real pictures.' These real pictures are a bold combination of theatricality, seduction and repulsion, and Grannan's obsessive and unrelenting photographs challenge our assumptions about the dynamic between artist and subject. Grannan was born in 1969; she received a BA from University of Pennsylvania and an MFA from Yale University. Grannan has been awarded The Baum Award for Emerging American Photographers and the Aperture Award to an Emerging Artist. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in the United States, Germany, Belgium and France, and is included in publications by Steidl, Aperture, Phaidon, Thames & Hudson. Grannan now lives in Berkeley, California. Elaine Stocki's Balcony is a unique exploration of uncertainty and poetic tensions. Stocki's images pose questions about psychological limitations as well as the chaos of human interactions yet stubbornly allows the viewer no answers. Stocki was born in 1979; she received a BS in chemistry and a BFA with honors in painting and photography from University of Manitoba and a MFA in photography from Yale University. Stocki was awarded the Tierney Fellowship as well as the Yale University School of Art Scholarship, Manitoba Arts Council Grant, ACADRE Fellowship Award and the Winnipeg Arts Council Travel Grant. Her work has been in exhibitions in numerous galleries in the United States as well as Germany and Canada.
