Seller: Ebeth & Abayjay Books, Lima, OH, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good -. Dust Jacket Condition: Good -. This highly complex, painstakingly detailed, 1514-page offering in VG-/G- condition is The Science of Life by H.G.Wells, Julian S.Huxley, and G.P.Wells, published by The Literary Guild, in association with Country Life Press, Garden City, New York, in 1934. Not an ex-library copy, the book's pages have yellowed modestly, as have the paste down and loose end pages front and back, and there is a small portion of webbing seen toward bottom of meeting place of front paste down and front loose end pages, as well as along the bottom third of meeting place of back paste down and loose end pages. This book's dust jacket has seen better days, due probably to the effective job it has done maintaining the still sound physical shape of this offering. Noticeable pieces of jacket are missing at both top and bottom edges of spine, and there is shelf wear/rattiness along portions of where back inside jacket flap folds, as well as along top edge of back cover piece. And, as a final insultitious, both inside flaps have been price clipped. This ambitious effort by this trio of authors was supposed to do for the sciences of biology, zoology, and anthropology what H.G.Wells' The Outline of History had previously done for history. This offering is nothing less than a complete "history" or survey of all Life, from its most humble, single-celled origins down to species "Homo sapiens". Complete with extensive Table of Contents detailing the nine "Books", Book Nine being "Biology of the Human Race", frequent Illustrations, Drawings, and Sketches to help clarify points made within the text(most Illustrations credited at bottom of underlying captions), and a voluminous, 33-page Index. H.G.Wells was no scientist; he is responsible for the literary and editorial aspect of this project, as well as being responsible for the initiation and organization of same. The "heavy lifting", scientifically speaking, as per the research and the building of the overall text, was done by Julian Huxley(grandson of noted associate of Charles Darwin, Professor T.H.Huxley), and George Philip Wells(son of H.G.Wells, and, at that time, a scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge). NOTE: This volume, too, was intended to be the best argument yet put forth in support of Darwin's theory of evolution, as opposed to the six-day account put forth in the Book of Genesis to explain the creation of all living things. This offering is quite something to look at and read through---but put on your science hat before you begin! Thanks!!.
