Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP; G. P. Putnam's Sons firsts= NAP). This book was previously owned by Theodore Bikel. His first wife lived nearby. The book bears his small bookplate on its front inside cover. The bookplate is in very nice condition. 'Theodore Meir Bikel was an American actor, folk singer, musician, composer, unionist, and political activist. He appeared in films, including The African Queen, Moulin Rouge, The Kidnappers, The Enemy Below, I Want to Live!, My Fair Lady, The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming, and 200 Motels. For his portrayal of Sheriff Max Muller in The Defiant Ones, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He made his stage debut in Tevye the Milkman in Tel Aviv, Israel, when he was in his teens. He later studied acting at Britain's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and made his London stage debut in 1948 and in New York in 1955. He was also a widely recognized and recorded folk singer and guitarist. In 1959, he co-founded the Newport Folk Festival, and created the role of Captain von Trapp opposite Mary Martin as Maria in the original Broadway production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's The Sound of Music. In 1969, Bikel began acting and singing on stage as Tevye in the musical Fiddler on the Roof, a role he performed more often than any other actor to date. The production won nine Tony Awards, and was one of the longest-running musicals in Broadway history. Bikel was president of the Associated Actors and Artistes of America until 2014, and was president of Actors' Equity in the late 1970s and early 1980s. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are mostly quite clean, there a few spots off the top edges of the front and rear cover. The silver lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges and corners are in very solid shape. The spine edges have only a tiny bit of crinkling. The top and middle page edges have some spotting/foxing. The bottom page edge does not. The middle page edge is deckled or rough-cut. They did a very good job. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The covers do bow out but only very slightly. The interior the book is in very nice condition. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through I'm not finding any soiling. On a small number of pages an amber spot of foxing from the middle page edge just barely peeks over the outer edge of the page. There is also some light foxing on the blank front and rear end papers, a tiny bit of the same on the inside covers. I'm not finding any creasing, no turned-down corners, no placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. The only attachment is the Theodore Bikel's bookplate. There is no writing to be found anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It looks pretty clean. There are no losses. There are a couple of small tears off the top edge of the spine, a little crease off the bottom edge of the spine. The flaps are in solid shape. They do have some light amber spotting/foxing. There is a very mild crease off the bottom corner of the front flap. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'A Lion In Court is both a fascinating record of the American law in action and a no-holds-barred, outspoken autobiography of this flamboyant and controversial attorney. The courtroom has been Hallinan's stage and there he has starred brilliantly. From his legal debut in the 1920s, when the San Francisco courts were controlled by the Market Street Railway Company, and judges were little more than paid stooges, to his run-in with the Immigration Department during the Bridges Case, Hallinan's brilliance and shrewdness have carried the day in court.'.
Hardcover. 319p., first edition, eight line inscription dated February 12, 1963 to "Best wishes to Jack Yashika, Nickie and Eric the violent" signed in full by Hallinan, spine faded else good condition lacking the jacket. ".tells of the circumstances that prompted him to assume the role of chief defense counsel in the 1950 trial of Harry Bridges when he was being tried for irregularities allegedly committed by him and others in applying for citizenship. The author describes some of the extraordinary episodes of that trial, characterizing the tactics of the government prosecutors as questionable, the position of the presiding judge as dubious, and the testimony of the prosecution witnesses as perjurious." *Slobodek, A selective bibliography of California labor history p. 182.
