Unbound. Condition: Fine. Howard Phipps (illustrator). 1st Edition. Hardy, Thomas (Howard Phipps). ENGRAVING OF THOMAS HARDY'S STUDY AT MAX GATE by Howard Phipps. Dorchester: Dorset County Museum, 1993. In FINE condition, enclosed within a bi-fold folio, also FINE. This stunning and highly detailed engraving was printed from the wood on an Arches, acid-free mould-made paper, using an 1862 Albion hand press. This wood engraving had been officially commissioned by the Dorset County Museum. Although the complete edition was limited to two hundred and fifty signed copies, this is one of the fifty (#11) which were reserved for patrons of the Literary Gallery Appeal. The engraving measures 8 ½" x 7 ¼" with the folio measuring 7 ½" x 10 ¾". Howard Phipps studied Fine Art at the Gloucestershire College of Art in Cheltenham. He is a painter/printmaker with a special interest in wood engraving. A member of the Royal West of England Academy since 1979, and the Society of Wood Engravers since 1985, he has also been a frequent exhibitor at Royal Academy summer exhibitions where he received the Contemporary Print Award for color engraving. In 2003 & 2004 he received the landscape print prize at the National Print Exhibition in London. Signed by Illustrator(s).
