First edition, first printing, presentation copy to Britain's wartime foreign secretary and later prime minister Anthony Eden, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Anthony Eden with vivid memories of former trips to Moscow with you & with my affectionate regards Averell Nov. 1959". Harriman played a pivotal role in great power politics during the Second World War. From 1941 to 1942 Harriman arranged the Lend-Lease program, and was present at the meeting which yielded the Atlantic Charter. From 1943 to 1946 he served as United States Ambassador to the Soviet Union. Peace with Russia is based on his reflections of Russia on his 1959 visit, focusing especially on the changes in the regime with the death of Stalin and ascendancy of Khrushchev. Eden, who served as prime minister from 1955 to 1957, was a friend of Harriman's, and it was while staying with him in December 1976 at Hobe Sound in Florida that he fell ill; James Callaghan arranged a plane to return him to the UK, where he died at home in January 1977. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Trivial bumping and rubbing at extremities, a near-fine copy.
