Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Library of Australian History, Sydney, 1988. Hardcover (20 x 25 cm), xvi, 268 pages. ISBN: 0908120664. The book and dust jacket are in Good condition. Bumped, scuffed, soiled. The dust jacket is protected by an archival cover which is affixed to the inside pastedowns. There are a couple of worn areas (divots) on front of dust jacket, towards bottom - near spine hinge. Rolled/creased at head & foot of spine. Previous owner's name written along top of front free page. "This book has been long awaited. It is the first guide for family historians wishing to follow the movements and destiny of an ancestor who was transported to Australia. It sets out the systematic sequence by which a convict can be traced from his conviction at court to his life in Australia and it provides invaluable assistance with that other genealogical problem - establishing the convict's place of origin. A convict ancestor was once a matter of shame, but times have changed and by Australia's bicentenary it has now become not merely acceptable but a source of pride for an Australian to have an ancestor who was a transported criminal. The identification of such a convict and the parish from which he came is, of course, the essential link for many Australians with their earlier family history in Britain. **Please Note** This is a rather large, heavy book that may require additional postage charges (above the default quoted amount) to overseas destinations. Overseas buyers please email [using Ask Bookseller a Question hyperlink] for a more accurate postage quote prior to purchasing. Weight (before packaging): 920g.

First Edition
1st edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dust-wrapper. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Physical description; xx, 507 p.: ill. ; 25 cm. Includes bibliographical references (p. 444-448) and indexes. Summary; A detailed guide to the vast collection of records created by the Poor Laws (1601-1948). From the sixteenth century onwards many laws were enacted to provide support for the poor and needy, and some parishes established poor houses in which to look after their homeless. In 1834, with the creation of the Poor Law Commission, the whole of England and Wales was formed into Unions of parishes, and each Union built its own workhouse. The workhouses gained a reputation for cruelty in the eyes of the public, yet this system of social security was not abolished until the creation of the NHS in 1948. Being part of the government bureaucracy, detailed records were kept of everything: rate-payers, collectors of rates, workhouse overseers and the staff and inmates of workhouses, as well as poor people who were helped to move to the north of England to work in industry, those given assisted passage to Australia and children sent to Canada. David T. Hawkings, one of Britain's leading genealogists and the author of "Criminal Ancestors and Railway Ancestors", here explains how these records can be used to discover details of your ancestry, providing an important, must-have resource for genealogists and family historians who want to make use of this comprehensive repository of information. Subjects; Poor laws - England - History - Sources. Poor laws - Wales - History - Sources. Poor laws - Great Britain - History - Archival resources. Poor - Great Britain - History - Archival resources. Poor - Great Britain - Genealogy. Genealogy - Great Britain - Sources. England - Genealogy. Wales - Genealogy. Family history; Law & society.
