Front hinge starting but very firm. Internally firmly bound with bright pages. Scattered spotting heavier to the front and rear. Very minor creasing and the odd chip to the rear. The odd page unopened. Age toning and light spotting to the fore edge. Very Good. book.

A first edition copy of this charming and copiously illustrated work on tennis and other racket sports, from the renowned 'The Badminton Library of Sports and Pastimes' series. The Badminton Library, originally published in twenty-eight volumes between 1885 and 1896, was a sporting and publishing project conceived and founded by Henry Somerset 8th Duke of Beaufort. It developed into a series of sporting books which aimed to cover all major sports and pastimes, with each volume written by experts who were authorities in their fields. This a deluxe edition copy of this first edition work; in a half crushed morocco binding with bright orange boards, and a gilt coat of arms to the front board and gilded top page edges. Copiously illustrated throughout with in-text woodcut illustrations and twelve black and white plates. In the publisher's original half crushed morocco binding, with orange cloth over boards. Externally very smart, with slight rubbing to extremities. Rubbing and slight fading to spine, as expected with this colour binding. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but bright, with scattered spots to fore edge of pages, visible to textblock. Heavier spotting to first and last few pages, and the occasional page. Very Good. book.
