Book First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. Hertzog, Carl - Cover Design (illustrator). First Edition Stated. 62 Pages Indexed. As new gift quality book with stapled binding. No defects noted and interior text pages are near flawless. In the southwest corner of New Mexico is a magic circle a hundred or so miles in diameter, with the Gila Cliff Dwellings at its center. Within this circle is the area known as the Mogollons, from the name of the principal mountain range. As the sea flows around an island, lapping at its margin yet never engulfing it, so civilization in its westward flow leaves the Mogollons inviolate from encroachment-much the same yesterday, today, and forever. How can this be? In the first place, the rugged mountains cut through by sheer canyons persuaded explorers and settlers to go around rather than into the Mogollons. Then these natural strongholds enabled the Apaches to repel all others for many years. Finally, the United States government had the foresight to guarantee permanent preservation by beginning as early as 1899 to establish here the Gila National Forest. Then within it, in 1907, the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument in the Gila Wilderness Area was protected in its primitive state since 1924, as the first and one of the largest of the Wildernesses. It is good fortune for us, as well as for future generations, that this magic circle of the Mogollons remains forever frontier. Now readily accessible, with paved roads leading to but never through it, the area will continue to seem remote. This is the kind of experience the reader is invited to share as the author tells about a visit that she, her husband, and small daughter made to the Gila Cliff Dwellings in 1950. Interwoven are accounts by a frontier cavalry man and by a pioneer prospector of visits they made in the 1880's, and pervading all is a vivid impression of the ancient ones who lived at the Gila Cliff Dwellings in prehistoric times, then disappeared, but remain the focus of interest there. A compilation of information through 1966 is provided for the casual reader and for the researcher, in the Notes and Appendices. So this first booklet on the Gila Cliff Dwellings links past, present, future at the center of the Mogollon magic circle, which is forever frontier. In addition to history and notes, there are 4 appendices covering (A), archeology with extracts from Bandelier, Cosgrove, Gould, & Reed; (B) geology with notes from Elston Trauger & Weber; (C) animal life and plant life including lists from Snyder and Sleznick; and (D) a bibliography of the area. There are 27 illustrations consisting mostly of black and white photographs.

The El Paso Salt War, also known as the Salinero Revolt and the San Elizario Salt War, began in the late 1860s and was a struggle between El Paso, Texas businessmen to acquire title to the salt deposits near the base of the Guadalupe Mountains. The political and legal struggle extended to an armed conflict waged with the Mexican and Tejano residents living in the communities on both sides of the Rio Grande. What began as a local quarrel grew in the 12-year struggle to gain the attention of both the Texas and federal governments and newspapers covered the story across the nation. At the conflict?s height, as many as 650 men bore arms and up to 30 men were killed, along with numerous more being wounded before it was over. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.
