Book First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Yamashita, Mina - Hand Binding and Book Design (illustrator). First Edition. 29 Un-numbered pages. Except for very minor cover edge wear no other defects noted. Interior pages are flawless. This is copy 79 of 200 numbered copies in hand sewn wrappers. Hillerman's achievements in mystery writing have been recognized by the prestigious Grand Master Award of the Mystery Writers of America (1991), the Grand Prix de Literature Policiere, Grenoble, France and awards from the National Park Service and the American Anthropological Association. Of his many other awards, Hillerman has found most meaningful the Special Friend to the Dineh Award which he received from The Navajo Nation for authentically portraying the strength and dignity of traditional Navajo culture. This is not a bibliography. This is a checklist of the first American editions of Hillerman's books with enough description to identify them correctly. Later reprints with new material by Hillerman are also included The values indicated are approximate and are for copies in collector's condition fine to very fine for book and dust jacket. An inferior copy of any modern first will fetch a lower price, while truly pristine copies or copies which bear Hillerman's signature will often exceed the upper limit. The estimated values are based on a systematic tabulation of prices asked in modem first edition and mystery fiction catalogs and auction records over the past five years. In addition, conversations and correspondence with many members of the book trade have been useful. Finally, Spencer Maxwell has made refinements in the ranges indicated to reflect winter 1991/92 values. Although Hillerman's first four novels were nominated to receive the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Novel, it was not until Harper & Row made a major first printing and promotional commitment to Talking God that Hillerman achieved national popularity.
